GRADY

“Grady!”

“Squid!” I laughed as I heard Squid’s bare feet slapping at the tile as she ran down the hall.

“Hank is here!” Cydney laughed, her loud voice echoing through the still half-empty house. “With Nicole!”

“Hey, neighbors,” I heard Hank yell from the front of the house. I heard his boots thud as he walked down the hall, and I could hear Nicole’s tennis shoes squeaking on the tile. “What are you doing in here, boy?”

“Just finished painting an ‘accent wall’, whatever the fuck that means.”

Hank laughed and then reached around Nicole’s shoulders and squeezed her close to him. In the month since Ella and Cydney had moved in with me, Hank and Nicole had been frequent visitors. I was happy that Ella had a good friend in Nicole and that the two of them could talk about their pregnancy pains together.

“What’s next on the agenda?” Hank asked.

“Assemble the furniture.” I groaned. “I tried to get her to let me have them put it all together but when she found out how much extra it cost, she reminded me that I’m a mechanic and assembling things is part of my livelihood.”

Hank howled with laughter. “God, it’s good to see you humbled.”

“She’s killing me, Hank,” I whined, knowing that Ella was walking toward us in the hall. As always, she was barefoot, but I could still hear her coming. “It’s like no one’s ever been pregnant before or something.”

Nicole was glowering at me, but the sound that came out of Ella’s mouth as she rounded the corner was enough to have Hank and I both jumping out of her way.

“What did you just say?” Ella growled. “I’m killing you? Oh, I’ll kill you, buddy.”

“Whoa, girl.” Hank laughed. “He was just fucking with you.”

Nicole and Ella both glared at me, and I bit my lip and looked down at my boots. Ella had resisted shopping for maternity clothes even though her belly had gotten a lot bigger. When we were at home, she just let it all hang out, dressing in whatever felt good that day.

Today, she was wearing a pair of my boxers and a tank top over her bikini. The waistband of my boxers was rolled up and rested right under her belly, and the tank top was stretched thin and bunched up on the top of it.

“Hi, Nicole.” Ella smiled at her friend. “Hank.”

“I didn’t say anything!” Hank laughed. “Don’t give me the death glare.”

“I’ve still got your suit,” Ella said to Nicole as she nodded toward the back yard. “Want to float with me while the cavemen build things?”

“Definitely.” Nicole got on her toes and kissed Hank on the chin. “Good practice for when you put our nursery furniture together.”

“I don’t care what you say, baby, I’m going to pay extra for the store to do it.”

“Wouldn’t you rather it was put together the right way? What are the statistics for injuries that children receive from furniture?” Nicole whispered. I saw Hank’s eyes flare. He was a trivia kind of guy and probably knew the answer to her question, but he tried hard not to take the bait.
